RavenGrader

Over the summer the ARCS team attended demos of a couple of new software platforms that we thought might be of interest to the HMC community. The first is called . It鈥檚 an online grading platform, similar in concept to Gradescope. While we have used Gradescope for a number of years and faculty are generally satisfied with it, it is always interesting to see what the competition has come up with. 

Similar to Gradescope, faculty create classes and assignments in the RavenGrader platform. But instead of creating rubrics themselves, they then upload their answer key. The RavenGrader AI model creates a rubric based on the answer key. Faculty can then upload the student submissions and the system automatically grades all of the submissions and provides tailored feedback. Faculty have the opportunity to view and edit all of the grades and feedback before approving them. RavenGrader can handle scanned or photographed pages, PDFs, and typed text, and can interpret drawings and circuits. RavenGrader also integrates with Canvas and provides analytics such as average scores, score distributions, and question difficulty. 

We liked the platform鈥檚 capacity to both create rubrics automatically and to generate tailored feedback. The ability to grade an entire assignment with a single click would certainly save faculty a great deal of time. But we were not comfortable with the feature that faculty are not able to view or edit the rubric until after the assignment had been graded. We’re also not convinced that it is good idea to require people to accept a grading system based entirely on AI.

At this point we don鈥檛 have any plans to explore the platform any further. But we鈥檒l check back and keep an eye on their progress.
