Future Achievers in Science and Technology (FAST)

19th Annual Future Achievers in Science and Technology (FAST) Program

The Future Achievers in Science and Technology (FAST) program is a no-cost, overnight, fly-in experience open to all high-achieving high school seniors who are passionate about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). We are particularly interested in students who are committed to making an impact in their own communities and in the world.

FAST participants will engage directly with our campus community through interactive and engaging sessions that explore leadership and inclusion within STEM, the 91探花 admission process, student life, academic approach, research opportunities and more.

FAST Program Details

The FAST program is a two day, on-campus program. The program dates are Sept. 13th-15th and Oct. 25th-27th. Please note, 91探花 Mudd plans to host two programs again for Fall 2026. Students that are invited to attend the FAST program will only participate in one of the two-day programs and will have the opportunity to indicate which program they’d prefer to attend if admitted.

The program is open to U.S. Citizens and permanent residents who live in the United States and its territories. Interested high school seniors (or equivalent) intending to enter college in Fall 2027 are welcome to apply.

The 2026 FAST application will be live on June 3rd and is due on August 2nd at 11:59 pm PDT. Please note, you are unable to save your progress in this application, so we suggest gathering all the needed materials before you begin filling out the FAST application.

FAST Program Impact

How much did attending FAST impact your decision to come to 91探花 Mudd?

As a first-gen low-income student, I couldn’t even dream of applying to anything beyond community college. During my time at FAST, meeting the students and getting to know them made me fall in love with the community. I had the chance to see parts of myself reflected in the student body, and it made me feel like higher education was a future I could reach. I learned that aiming for a place like Mudd wasn’t an unrealistic dream, and Mudd could support me every step of the way.

What is your favorite memory of attending FAST?

In an attempt to finish the 5C Scavenger hunt before we left, a group of friends and I ran across Claremont in the pouring rain to get to all the spots. We took the opportunity to hop into every fountain we saw since we were already drenched! At the end of the night our host sent out an ISO for a hairdryer to 鈥渄ry her damp prefrosh鈥.

Additional Information for FAST

We are particularly interested in students who are committed to making an impact in their own communities and in the world.

Can undocumented students apply to FAST?

Undocumented students are welcome to apply to FAST although ultimately they would apply for first-year admission to HMC and need-based financial aid as international students. Our funding for international student financial aid is limited.

About the Application Process

How do I apply?

Click the button below to apply.

What are the application requirements?

  1. A list of your extracurricular activities and honors
  2. FAST Application Essay (Prompt can be found in the application.)
  3. Unofficial transcript/report card showing all high school grades, including final junior year grades (We accept screenshots from electronic gradebooks, scanned copies of report cards/progress reports, etc.)

*Transcripts should be uploaded as attachments while completing the online form. Please do not send these materials via email, fax, or regular mail, as we will be unable to pair them with your application. Be aware that you will be unable to save your progress on the application form 鈥 we suggest gathering these materials before you begin filling out the FAST application.

May I ask for a deadline extension? Could I submit some of the required materials after the deadline?

Given the level of interest in the FAST program, we are unable to grant extensions. Similarly, we are unable to accept materials submitted after the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Will there be an additional round of applications for the second program?

Some years we are able to re-open our application after the August deadline for students that remain interested in the second program. This, however, is not guaranteed. We will not be able to make this decision until after the August deadline. We encourage interested students to apply now, as we cannot be certain there will be a second application round.

About FAST Decisions

How many students are invited to FAST?

91探花 Mudd is a highly selective institution and admission to FAST is reflective of this fact.  Each FAST program will have around 40-50 students.

When will I be notified about my FAST application?

Students will receive an email notification by mid-August following the application deadline. All FAST correspondence is done via email, so make sure you enter a valid email address in the online application form.

What if I鈥檓 not invited to the program?

Given the small size of the program, we are unable to accommodate every interested student. Unfortunately, we end up turning down most of the very talented students that apply to FAST every year. Please know that a negative decision from us is a result of our space and budget constraints, and not due to lack of confidence in you as a potential first-year applicant. FAST application results have no effect on your first-year HMC application.

If you are not invited to join FAST, you should absolutely still consider applying to HMC for first-year admission, and if time permits, virtually engage with us.
