Learn how to create a new Page<\/strong> or Post<\/strong> in 91̽»¨ Mudd’s WordPress website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note<\/strong>: not every part of the website uses Posts. If the site you are editing is not configured for Posts then the option to create them will be absent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Page vs Post: What’s the Difference?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

WordPress defines the two types of webpage that you might create as either a Page<\/strong> or a Post<\/strong> (this may seem confusing as both types create what you’d call a “webpage”).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most webpages on the Mudd website are the WordPress type Page<\/strong>. This webpage you are reading is of the WordPress type Page<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Post<\/strong> content type is used for what you might call blog posts. At Mudd, the news articles we publish are created using the Post<\/strong> content type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other places we use the Post<\/strong> content type include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Admission blog<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • HSA announcements<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Presidential announcements<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Physics departmental news<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Both Pages<\/strong> and Posts<\/strong> are created in a similar fashion. The main difference is how they are organized and displayed on the website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Page Organization <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Imagine individual Pages as branches of a tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Pages are organized in a hierarchical manner. e.g. this webpage is a child of the WordPress How-Tos webpage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Pages are normally accessed from a dropdown menu.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Post Organization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Imagine all Posts in a big bucket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • Posts are organized in a categorical matter. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • A Post may have one or more category. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Users can filter how they view a list of Posts based on these categories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • A Post about students conducting physics research may have the categories students<\/em>, physics<\/em> and research<\/em>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Steps to Create New Page<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        1. From the Dashboard, hover over “New” in the admin bar and select either “Page.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. Alternatively, on the left menu, hover over “Pages” and select “Add New.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        3. Either method will open up the editor with a new blank page.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Steps to Create New Post<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          1. If your site has a blog, creating a new post is very similar to creating a new page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          2. From the dashboard, hover over “New” and select “Post.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          3. You can also hover over “Posts” on the left menu and select “Add New.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n
