Currently, there is no method for automating safe deployment of a cannula into a patient who needs to undergo extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The goal of this project is to automate the cannulation procedure to improve reliability and expand ECMO access, which is constrained by limited ECMO-trained physicians. The Lifemotion Clinic team was tasked with the design and rapid iteration of an electromechanical device for enhancing cannulation efficiency.

Musizi University is a new institution of higher education located in Ntinda, in Kampala, Uganda. Co-founded by Elaine Alowo-Matovu and Takako Mino CMC ’11, Musizi will open its doors in fall 2026. The degree programs, including a BSC in software engineering, are tuned to the nation’s need for professional paths in technology, business and health. The Clinic team designed several courses for Musizi’s software engineering degree, including Ethics in Science and Technology, Data Mining, Discrete Mathematics, and Data Structures and Algorithms.

Platalytix aims to expedite the global transition to renewable energy by making hydrogen an economically viable energy source. They design catalyst materials for water electrolysis/hydrogen production that match or exceed the performance of current platinum catalysts for lower costs. The Clinic team characterized the electrochemical efficiency of these new catalysts and worked to maximize their performance-per-dollar through sourcing low-cost recycled materials for manufacturing, magnetically enhancing the electrolysis reaction and developing a cost-composition-performance model to achieve the optimal composition.

There are over 80 million active landmines in post-conflict areas all over the world. Sokil is a humanitarian demining startup which aims to use low-cost sensor systems to autonomously detect landmines under light brush. The Sokil team has constructed a hand-portable LIDAR scanner, designed various light detection and ranging (LIDAR) algorithms, and performed field testing to compare the performance of their algorithms against modern sUAV imaging techniques.

Sokil is a humanitarian demining start-up founded by 91̽»¨ Mudd students Ivan Dudiak ’26 and Xander Fries ’24, who developed a low-cost magnetometry-drone system to detect ferrous-cased mines deployed in Ukraine. Sokil wishes to expand its demining capabilities to include plastic-cased mines obstructed by vegetation. The Sokil Clinic team developed drone-based methods capable of detecting non-ferrous mines, conducted testing on RADAR, LiDAR and multispectral imaging systems, and integrated a final LiDAR sensor system to achieve this goal.

Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are promising renewable energy sources in areas experiencing multidirectional wind flow, though extensive aeroelastic validation of VAWTs has not occurred. The DTU/HWU Clinic team worked to increase the power generation capabilities of a previously developed VAWT prototype for Malaysia deployment. This prototype will be used to validate VAWT models on the simulation software HAWC2. By contributing to the literature and research of VAWTs, the team set the stage for advancements in their design and implementation.

The 10xEngineers Clinic team developed a suite of SystemVerilog coverpoints and RISC-V assembly-language tests to achieve architectural functional verification of the RVA22S64 profile. The team used these tests to verify the open-source CORE-V WALLY to Technology Readiness Level 5. Additionally, the project has contributed these open-source tests for microcontrollers and application processors to RISC-V International.

Deploying an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) cannula is a complex procedure that requires a high level of skill and is challenging to perform safely outside of the emergency room (ER), operating room or intensive care unit (ICU). The goal of this project is to create an ECMO cannulation system that safely and effectively deploys the cannula in an emergency environment outside of the ER or ICU. This system equips an emergency medical professional, such as a paramedic, to rapidly cannulate the patient. The device must be validated on a clinical ECMO dummy.
