SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Mahjong and Its Cultural Forms
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition and public program exploring mahjong as a cultura
 l form\, through the presentation of visual materials and community archiv
 e alongside a series of game play days and public events. Throughout the e
 xhibition\, co-organizers Assistant Professor in Architecture Jia Yi Gu an
 d Angie Lin of Mahjong Mistresses and East Never Loses will host public le
 ssons and programs\, blending traditional game play with contemporary musi
 c and nightlife. The Claremont community is invited to join in laying the 
 table in a larger-than-life mahjong experience.\n\nThe exhibition includes
  related events:\n\nMahjong Office Hours\nThursdays in October 5:30–7:30
  p.m.\nShakespeare Theater\, Sprague Gallery\n\nFaculty and community memb
 ers host informal two-hour mahjong workshops/office hours. These sessions 
 will offer students\, faculty\, staff and community members a chance to dr
 op in\, learn the basics of mahjong\, practice playing and spend time toge
 ther around the table.\n\nHouse Rules: A Conversation with Nicole Wong and
  Angie Lin\nOct. 12\, 12:30–1:30 p.m.\nShakespeare Theater\; Sprague Art
  Gallery\n\nHosted by Intercollegiate Media Studies\, Nicole Wong (author 
 of Mahjong: House Rules Across the Asian Diaspora) and Angie Lin gather fo
 r a presentation of various house rules that have shaped families and gene
 rations.\n\nMahjong Night—Main Event\nNov. 5\, 6–9 p.m.\nShakespeare T
 heater\, Sprague Art Gallery\n\nAn evening to learn mahjong and play colle
 ctively\, gathering for larger than life mahjong\, Taiwanese pop songs wit
 h live DJ and food and drinks by Gu Groceries. The program offers a welcom
 ing space for intergenerational play and connection with vibrant social tr
 aditions surrounding mahjong.
